I had asian games coming up so I ended up going to Hongzhou, Chaina. The game was in September to October and the mean time I practiced with my coach on a stadium nearby.
One day, following my daily routine after a few days, I encountered a female dog sneaking around in the stadium. She inspected me from afar and when I blew a whistle, she came running towards me.
I was an animal lover from as long as I could remember and that dog was quite friendly. I named her Nika because my name was Nina.
Going there on practice and meeting her every morning and evening became my schedule. My days felt incomplete without her. A few weeks later, the guard started noticing her. I heard him say that he was going to take her away from there because it wasn’t a place for dogs.
I wasn’t planning to take her in, but I could no longer imagine my mornings without her in them. So I took her with me. The dorm I stayed in didn’t allowed dogs so I had no other option then to sneak her in secretly.
I kept her with me day in and day out, my fellow player helped me. A few more weeks passed and I figured out that Nika was pregnant.
It was quite shocking as I never thought that she would be pregnant. She looked quite young and not pregnant. But it wasn’t fear what I had, it was excitement.
I was excited that I was going to get not only one but so many baby dogs. We kept our secret a little longer untill I found that there was a pet store nearby.
I called my mom to China for the games were about to start and I needed to give it my whole concentration. Also, Nika needed someone by her side. Soon after my mom arrived, I went to the Asian games village.
A few hours before my final competition, my mom texted me that Nika was about to give birth.
I was so excited and motivated, I thought that if Nika could go through so much pain, why can’t I do this? I was highly motivated to win that game.
I did ended up getting the first position in the games. I went back to Canada with a gold medal and some new family members.
The trip to China was not only worth it, but I took so many things back to home to remember and live with for the rest of my life.
So, when are you adopting your new family member?
You know , one time I brought a stray dog home when I was just a little girl. My father didn’t approved of it so I ended up leaving it, heartbroken.
So the first thing I did when I moved out, was adopting a stray. My parents do come over sometimes but I never feel lonely or unloved. A company of dog is always something to die for.
